1. Scrabble calendar fun
I heart my Scrabble calendar. I got these 7 letters: C H N S P I O.I kept making words that were one vowel off, so I noticed that the first 6 letter +
Like this: C H N S P I + {A, E, O, U}
- spinach
- pinches
- phonics
- chin-ups (not a real Scrabble word... sue me)
You also get Scrabble trivia in the calendar.
The count and value of Scrabble tiles corresponds to their usage in the English language. In other words, the more a letter is used, then the more tiles for that letter and the fewer points it is assigned. One letter in Scrabble does not follow this rule. They intentionally have fewer S tiles... to reduce the role of plurals in the game. Excellent.
You can put in 7 letters and this website will find all the Scrabble words you can make from them. Scrabble Word Finder - www.scrabblefinder.com
2. Ask the Dust
Review: 2 bill-stars (out of 5)... meh
Goodreads link: www.goodreads.com/review/show/270963657
I got this book because Charles Bukowski loves the author. I can certainly see similarities between Fante and Bukowski, but "Ask the Dust" just never had anything very interesting going on. And the writing style seemed pretty blase to me. Sorry, Mr. Chinaski. Not worth the read.
QOTD
"You look wonderful," I said. No chance to speak, she was over me again, clinging like a wet vine, her tongue like a frightened snake's head, searching my mouth.
- John Fante, Eat the Dust
3. Foxification
Follow along. For fun!1. So, the WSJ had an op-ed piece by 16 scientists questioning the global warming crowd (williamt post). Excellent.
2. Barry Ritholtz's leftie blog had a two-pronged retort (The Big Picture post) to the WSJ article. First, he complains that only one of the WSJ scientists are climatologists. Second, he cries crocodile tears about the "Foxification"of the WSJ. This is a tired argument: Fox = bad. Fox is full of righties, just as CNN, NBC, CBS, and ABC is full of lefties. The NY Times is full of righties, just as the WSJ is full of righties.
3. Finally, NBC News reports that our mild winter is caused by, you guessed it, global warming. And there you have it, a for real big shot climatologist claiming that global warming is causing our temperate winter.
In the report that followed, chief environmental affairs correspondent Anne Thompson added to the alarmism as she declared: "This most unusual January ending on a remarkably mild note across the country....2,890 daily high temperature records broken or tied." She later cited climatologist and global warming proponent Dr. Gerald Meehl of the National Center for Atmospheric Research: "Add to that a world warming because of climate change and it stacks the deck, Dr. Meehl says, against a traditional winter."
